Five Tips to Memorize Scripture
"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Psalm 119:11).
God's Word is clear: we are to study and learn His words — the Scriptures — so we can follow Him closely and live in ways that are pleasing to Him. This pursuit of holiness is ultimately for His glory, but also for our benefit, as He designed us and knows what is best for us!
So, how do we "hide" His word in our hearts? In addition to reading and studying the Bible, we are to commit as much of it to memory as possible. Memorization comes easy to some, proves very difficult for others, but it is possible for everyone... and He greatly rewards us for making the effort!
If you're looking for helpful hints and guidance (some may even call them "hacks") about how to memorize more Scripture, you're in the right place!
Repetition is one of the simplest and most powerful learning tools. Don’t underestimate its effectiveness! Just as a pianist must practice a piece again and again (and again) before he can play it proficiently, he must practice even more to commit the notes to his muscle memory. We are to treat God's Word the same: read it again and again (and again), and live our lives according to the Truth found within. Soon enough, we'll be able to recall His words easily, like "muscle memory."
Here's a few ways to give yourself repeated exposure to the verse(s) you're working to memorize:
1. Read the verse(s) every day, both out loud and silently to yourself. Give yourself "pop quizzes" periodically to check your progress (such as when riding an elevator or waiting in line at school pickup or the grocery store).
2. Write it down. Keep paper & a pen handy and regularly write out the verse. This can be simple, like a stack of sticky notes next to the TV remote or your office computer. The physical act of writing it down (not typing) significantly aids your memory!
3. Read and study the surrounding verses and/or full chapter. Context is important! "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Timothy 2:15).
4. Meditate on it. Pray about it. Think of the the verse often and list ways you can apply your life to it. Most importantly, let the Scripture direct your attention to Jesus, who loves you and sent the Holy Spirit to teach you!
5. Display the Scripture in a prominent place, where you will see it every day. Place your sticky notes (see #2) around your home and/or office to give you more opportunities to read it.
Can you think of any other ways to add to this list? Tell me about it! I will pray for you as you pursue God and learning His Word!
