Lovely to Meet You!
Hey friend! I’m so glad you’re here! Want to know why?? Because this is officially the first blog post from yours truly.
I’ve wanted to write a blog for several years, simply because I know all the knowledge and life (and business) lessons I’ve learned through the years are too much for me alone—someone else needs to know what I know! Future blog posts will include glimpses into this life of self-employment with small kids at home, my favorite tips and knowledge from years of graphic design work, and bite-size life-lesson anecdotes. If there’s something specific you want to know about, please ask!
But first, I want to get to know you better! Have you seen those introduction posts on Instagram where the person gives you 3 (or so) facts about themselves and you have to guess which one’s a lie?? Well, I’m going to do that for you, but I’ll spare you the guesswork: these are all true!
1) I have my motorcycle license.
Yep, it’s true! My uncle has ridden motorcycles for most of his life, and I can still remember those first rides he took me on. They weren’t long rides—maybe 10 or 15 miles through the countryside—but to my 10-year-old self they were a big deal! Once I felt the wind in my face, I was hooked. I learned to ride in my 20s and got my license, but never was a fully confident rider. Let’s face it: I’m clumsy by nature, and with the onset of rheumatoid arthritis in my late twenties, I didn’t trust my own strength. I haven’t been behind the handlebars since 2012, but I still love to ride with my husband, who is an avid rider! I keep my license up to date, just in case.
2) We live in my childhood home.
And let me tell you, it’s the gift that keeps on giving, both in good and unexpected ways! It brings me joy unspeakable to see our young boys growing up in the same house my brother and I did, making new memories in a place already full to the brim with them. My parents built this house in 1987-88, and it’s really nice knowing everything about it. My Mom passed away in 2009, and after Dad remarried in 2019, we bought it from him. As far as the unexpected things? Even though we cleaned out the house and had a massive yard sale after Dad remarried, things still managed to “turn up” after we moved in. Case in point: I found a stash of canned pickles my mom made… 15 years earlier!!
3) I majored in animation in college…
…only to realize in my last class that I hated making things move! At that point, though, it was too late to change my major (the scholarship money was running out!), so I stuck with it. I loved building things in the animation program—the structure, the shading, the layout, the lighting—but troubleshooting when the animation went wrong made me madder than the proverbial wet hen. (This was in the early 2000s… animation programs have come a a long way since then!) As an animation major, I was required to minor in art, and I took an extra elective class in typography. I had enough room in my schedule to pursue a second minor, and I chose entrepreneurship in the hopes I’d run my own business one day. Fast-forward a couple of decades, and here I am, running my own graphic design business, having not opened that animation program once since graduation.
I tell you all this to start a conversation. Now I want to hear from you! Leave a comment: what’s one interesting fact about yourself that not too many people know?
